In 1728, Edmund Ennett established a ferry at the site of what is now known as Sneads Ferry. The ferry became a key element in the Post road linking Suffolk, Va., with Charleston, S.C. By 1759; there were two ferries operating, one from each bank of the New River. Robert Snead was the proprietor of the ferry on the north shore so the community that developed on the banks of the crossing site became known as “Sneads Ferry”. This community is heavily dependent on the seafood industry and hauls in hundreds of tons of shrimp, flounder and clams, scallops, oysters, mullet, spot, grouper, soft and hard shell crabs, sea bass, and other varieties during the year. Every year the town has a Shrimp Festival to honor the local seafood industry. Sneads Ferry is located just south of Jacksonville, NC, on the southeastern shores of NC and tucked up against New River. This small, quaint town is considered in Onslow County and part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. With the small-town feel, this is an ideal location for retirees, as well as families looking for a safe and fun place to live. The schools for Snead’s Ferry are Dixon Elementary, Dixon Middle, and Dixon High School, but the Onslow County Public Schools are within the town's boundaries. This area offers plenty to do boating, swimming, fishing, kayaking, biking, golfing, tennis, parks, and much more. There are also many fishing charters in this area. With the large seafood industry here, you will find many restaurants serving all kinds of delicious seafood. There is also easy access to several beaches and parks, including Onslow Beach, Hurst Beach, Fulcher’s Landing Campground, and Stump Sound Park. Across the New River from Sneads Ferry, you will have Camp Lejeune Marine Corps of Jacksonville. Sneads Ferry has many different sizes and styles and different prices of homes to choose from, so there is something for everyone. You will have all the amenities needed for everyday living, but with the short drive to Jacksonville, you can get everything else needed or wanted.
