There are many places to live along the Intracoastal Waterway in Carteret County. Living on this body of water will offer you gorgeous views of the water, sunrise, sunset, birds and even dolphins swimming by. The waterway is very rich in history too. In the early 1800s, the Dismal Swamp connected the Chesapeake Bay of Virginia and the Albemarle Sound in NC. This was later replaced by a second canal that was much more efficient and was called the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal. After the Civil War, North Carolina revamped and reworked some of the canals by dredging them and formed the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). There is a tidal guard lock at the entrance to the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal which is accessed through Elizabeth City, NC. It is still in use today and runs about 120 miles from Norfolk, Va., along the rivers, creeks, and bays through the Alligator River to the Newport River and into Beaufort, NC. Some years later, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers made the next phase of the ICW and that goes from Beaufort all the way to Key West, Florida. This body of water offers many areas for boating and water sports and for homes giving them the gorgeous views and access that everyone wants of the water. You will never get tired of looking at these views or all the sounds and activities of the ICW as boats pass by or working barges come by or of the fishermen and the dolphins. Most areas along the ICW have easy access to everything you will need for everyday living, including shopping, doctors, hospitals, banks, churches, and post office and schools.
