Morehead City was created in 1841 when the Governor of NC, John Motley Morehead, saw the benefits of a commercial city where the Newport River and the Beaufort Inlet come together. Morehead and his associates acquired a large portion of the property and extended the Carolina Railroad from Goldsboro to this area. After they got the land they held an auction and sold all the property within three days. That is when Morehead City became known as more of a resort area than a port area. Morehead City has a beautiful waterfront with a boardwalk where you can walk and enjoy seeing the charter fishing boats and their catch. There are many small shops and restaurants along the waterfront and on the side streets that attract tourists year after year. Every year in October there is the Seafood Festival in downtown Morehead City. This festival celebrates the commercial fishermen of the area and serves seafood from this area. There are always many bands performing, carnival rides and vendors selling seafood and crafts and well as the famous “flounder fling”. This area also hosts The Blue Marlin Tournament every year in June. This is a week-long tournament that brings in many boats and fishermen and many tourists. There are other festivals and parades throughout the year. Morehead City has many beautiful big homes as well as your typical beach cottage homes. Many of the homes are located on the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) and on canals and creeks throughout the area and many other homes will have a water view. These homes are different sizes and price ranges making it possible for many people to have what they are looking for in a home. Morehead City offers all the amenities you will need for daily living including, groceries, gas stations, banks, churches, Walmart, Lowes, Tractor Supply, post office, medical, and a hospital. If you cross over the high-rise bridge you can be on the beaches of the Crystal Coast, where you can enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, shopping, dining, water sports, nature trails, and many other things. There are public schools and private schools located in this area and there is a Community College. Morehead City does have a fire department and police department.
