In 1887, the first bathing pavilion on Bogue Banks was built in the location where the Club Colony is today. There was a ready-made clientele, the patrons of the new Atlantic Hotel across Bogue Sound in Morehead City. The old Atlantic Hotel in Beaufort had been destroyed by a hurricane in 1879 and in 1880 the Morehead City Hotel Co. constructed what was called the "New Atlantic Hotel" in Morehead City at the terminus of the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad in order to make hotel accommodations in the area more convenient for the former patrons of the old Atlantic Hotel. Many of its guests desired to bathe in the ocean surf, so therefore a bathing pavilion on the ocean side of Bogue Banks had to be constructed to accommodate them. And the resort of Atlantic Beach was begun. Patrons of the Hotel flocked to the newly accessible beach in droves, and a brisk ferry trade to the Banks was started. Today there is a population of approximately 1600 people.
The beach area and the pavilions that were built would change hands several times through the years, and would eventually become what we know today as the beautiful Crystal Coast.
Sea Turtle Nesting season is from May 1 through October on Atlantic Beach and all along Bogue Banks. Of the seven sea turtle species, five are found in NC waters and loggerheads are the most common turtle nesting on NC beaches. All of the turtles are very protected by volunteers that walk the beaches every morning looking for what is called “sea turtle crawls” that show that a nest has been laid. When a nest is found it is roped off until the babies hatch out.
